This week, news emerged that a number of residential flats in Llandudno are set to be refurbished and used to house asylum seekers under the UK Government’s Resettlement Scheme.

The announcement has generated significant concern among nearby residents and local businesses, who are anxious about the impact on the town and frustrated by the lack of communication.

There is also worry among individuals and families who have been on local housing waiting lists or living in temporary accommodation for lengthy periods, many of whom feel disheartened by yet another setback.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Aberconwy, has expressed serious concern and has written to the Leader of Conwy County Borough Council requesting a formal explanation of how this decision was taken and what it means for the community.

Janet said:

“This week, I have been inundated with emails and visits from residents worried about plans to use flats in Llandudno to house asylum seekers.

Local residents and businesses are understandably anxious about the future of the town and disappointed by the lack of communication surrounding these proposals.

It is also deeply unfair on those who have been on housing waiting lists for long periods or have been placed in temporary accommodation while trying to support their families. Many are desperate for stability, and this news will be heartbreaking for them. I have seen a significant increase this year in people urgently seeking housing support.

I have now written to the Leader of the Council requesting a formal statement on this matter, setting out how the process will work and providing answers to the many questions residents have raised.”

Yr wythnos hon, daeth i’r amlwg y bydd nifer o fflatiau preswyl yn Llandudno yn cael eu hadnewyddu a'u defnyddio i gartrefu ceiswyr lloches dan Gynllun Adsefydlu Llywodraeth y DU.

Mae'r cyhoeddiad wedi creu cryn bryder ymhlith trigolion a busnesau lleol, sy'n poeni am yr effaith ar y dref ac sy'n teimlo'n rhwystredig yn sgil y diffyg cyfathrebu.

Hefyd, mae unigolion a theuluoedd sydd wedi bod ar restrau aros tai lleol neu'n byw mewn llety dros dro am gyfnodau hir yn poeni'n fawr - llawer ohonynt wedi'u digalonni’n llwyr gan rwystr arall.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, AS Aberconwy, wedi mynegi pryder difrifol ac wedi ysgrifennu at Arweinydd Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy yn gofyn am esboniad ffurfiol o sut y daethpwyd i'r penderfyniad hwn a beth mae'n ei olygu i'r gymuned.

Meddai Janet:

“Yr wythnos hon, dwi wedi cael llwyth o negeseuon e-bost ac ymweliadau gan drigolion sy'n poeni am gynlluniau i ddefnyddio fflatiau yn Llandudno i gartrefu ceiswyr lloches.

Mae trigolion a busnesau lleol wrth reswm yn bryderus am ddyfodol y dref ac yn siomedig gan y diffyg cyfathrebu ynglŷn â'r cynigion hyn.

Ar ben hynny, mae'n annheg ar y rhai sydd wedi bod ar restrau aros am dai am gyfnodau hir neu sydd wedi eu rhoi mewn llety dros dro wrth geisio cefnogi eu teuluoedd. Mae llawer yn chwilio'n daer am sefydlogrwydd, a bydd y newyddion hyn yn dorcalonnus iddyn nhw. Rydw i wedi gweld cynnydd sylweddol eleni mewn pobl sy'n ceisio cymorth tai ar frys.

Rydw i bellach wedi ysgrifennu at Arweinydd y Cyngor yn gofyn am ddatganiad ffurfiol ar y mater hwn, gan nodi sut fydd y broses yn gweithio ac yn rhoi atebion i'r cwestiynau niferus sydd wedi'u codi gan drigolion.”
