Coal for British Steel Should come from Wales / Dylai glo ar gyfer Dur Prydain ddod o Gymru

Calls have been made in the Welsh Parliament for the Welsh Government to amend planning policy so that the British steel sector can purchase coal from Wales.

At present planning policy only allows coal extraction in wholly exceptional circumstances.

Despite our country still needing coal, we are reliant on imports. The UK imports approximately 3.4 million tonnes of coal annually.

The UK Government reported that more than 55,000 tonnes of coking coal arrived from Australia over the weekend for the Scunthorpe steel plant.

Commenting on the steel sector in Wales and the UK, Janet said:

“On one hand the Welsh nationalists argue that the furnaces should still be burning in Wales, but with the other they argue against using Welsh coal.

“It makes complete sense to source coking coal from our country, and boost economic growth in Wales.

“Andrew Morgan, WLGA, told our Climate Change Committee that Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is regularly contacted by private companies with offers to remediate disused tips owned by the council and make use of the coal.

“We should look at the possibility of such offers being accepted, and where safe, support the potential of re-mining as part of making tips secure.”

Mae galwadau wedi cael eu gwneud yn y Senedd ar i Lywodraeth Cymru ddiwygio ei pholisi cynllunio fel y gall sector dur Prydain brynu glo o Gymru.

Ar hyn o bryd mae'r polisi cynllunio yn caniatáu cloddio am lo yn unig dan amgylchiadau cwbl eithriadol.

Er bod ein gwlad yn dal i fod angen glo, rydyn ni’n dibynnu ar fewnforion. Mae'r DU yn mewnforio tua 3.4 miliwn tunnell o lo bob blwyddyn.

Adroddodd Llywodraeth y DU fod mwy na 55,000 tunnell o lo golosg wedi cyrraedd o Awstralia dros y penwythnos ar gyfer ffatri ddur Scunthorpe.

Wrth sôn am y sector dur yng Nghymru a'r DU, dywedodd Janet:

"Ar yr un llaw mae'r cenedlaetholwyr Cymreig yn dadlau y dylai'r ffwrneisi barhau i losgi yng Nghymru, ond gyda'r llaw arall maen nhw'n dadlau yn erbyn defnyddio glo o Gymru.
"Mae'n gwneud synnwyr llwyr i gael glo golosg o'n gwlad, a rhoi hwb i dwf economaidd yng Nghymru.
"Dywedodd Andrew Morgan, CLlLC, wrth ein Pwyllgor Newid Hinsawdd fod cwmnïau preifat yn cysylltu â Chyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Rhondda Cynon Taf yn rheolaidd gyda chynigion i adfer tomenni segur sy'n eiddo i'r cyngor a defnyddio'r glo.
"Dylem edrych ar y posibilrwydd o dderbyn cynigion o'r fath, ac os yw hynny’n ddiogel, cefnogi'r potensial o ail-gloddio fel rhan o’r broses o wneud pyllau glo yn ddiogel."
