Citizens Advice on Conwy Council’s chopping block / Cyngor ar Bopeth i ddioddef bwyell Cyngor Conwy

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has expressed her disappointment on hearing that Conwy Council plan on cutting funding to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

Released in their Budget Reduction Proposal, Conwy Council plan a cessation of annual payment to Citizen Advise, specifically, bringing an end to funding for work assisting with Housing Benefits & Council Tax queries.

This will be a huge blow to the Conwy community, with Citizens Advice helping over 4 million people – over 7% of the population – in England and Wales in 2022/23. This service is vital to those who require help in our society.

When the council’s report itself cites an ‘adverse external impact’ on the community, it is not apparent that pursuing these cuts is not a reasonable way forward?

Commenting on this Janet said:

“Yet more cuts from Conwy Council that will deeply affect our community. Being a source of advice for the community myself I know how vital these services can be for people.

“At a time when more of us are struggling and seeking advice it is madness to be taking such extreme measures. It will only mean more people become lost and confused when dealing with complicated and intimidating problems – exacerbating problems further down the line. Some may even think that there is no help at all.

“I severely hope that Conwy Council will readdress this immediately and agree to continue funding Citizens Advice so that our community can continue to have somewhere to go in times of need.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi mynegi ei siom o glywed bod Cyngor Conwy yn bwriadu cwtogi cyllid i'r Ganolfan Cyngor ar Bopeth.

Wedi'i gyhoeddi yn eu Cynnig Lleihau’r Gyllideb, mae Cyngor Conwy yn bwriadu rhoi'r gorau i’r taliad blynyddol i Cyngor ar Bopeth, yn benodol, gan ddod â chyllid i ben ar gyfer gwaith sy'n cynorthwyo gydag ymholiadau am Fudd-daliadau Tai a’r Dreth Gyngor.

Bydd hyn yn ergyd enfawr i gymuned Conwy, gyda Cyngor ar Bopeth yn helpu dros 4 miliwn o bobl - dros 7% o'r boblogaeth - yng Nghymru a Lloegr yn 2022/23. Mae'r gwasanaeth hwn yn hanfodol i'r rhai sydd angen cymorth yn ein cymdeithas.

Pan fo adroddiad y cyngor ei hun yn cyfeirio at 'effaith andwyol' ar y gymuned, onid yw’n amlwg nad toriadau fel hyn yw’r ffordd resymol ymlaen?

Meddai Janet:

"Mwy o doriadau eto fyth gan Gyngor Conwy a fydd yn effeithio'n fawr ar ein cymuned. A minnau’n ffynhonnell gyngor i'r gymuned fy hun, rwy'n gwybod pa mor hanfodol y gall y gwasanaethau hyn fod i bobl.

"Ar adeg pan mae mwy ohonom ni’n cael trafferth ymdopi ac yn ceisio cyngor, mae'n wallgofrwydd cymryd camau mor eithafol. Bydd hyn ond yn golygu bod mwy o bobl yn colli eu ffordd ac yn drysu wrth ddelio â phroblemau cymhleth a brawychus - gan waethygu’r problemau ymhellach yn y dyfodol. Efallai y bydd rhai hyd yn oed yn meddwl nad oes unrhyw help ar gael o gwbl.

"Rwy'n gobeithio'n fawr y bydd Cyngor Conwy yn ailystyried hyn ar unwaith ac yn cytuno i barhau i ariannu’r Cyngor ar Bopeth fel y gall ein cymuned barhau i fod â noddfa y gallant droi ati yn eu hangen."
