The Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Energy and Rural Affairs – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has marked the annual Farmhouse Breakfast week by encouraging the public to get involved with breakfast week by purchasing locally sourced breakfast ingredients.

The annual celebration will run from Monday 18 - Sunday 24 January 2021. This year, the campaign is further hoping to raise vital funds for the DPJ Foundation by asking consumers to make a small donation alongside their breakfast produce purchase. If you want to make a direct donation, you can do so here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/fuw-breakfast-week

Commenting on the celebration of local produce, Janet said:

“I always look forward to this wonderful celebration of local produce, as an innovative way of championing local producers and their excellent products. For your breakfast, the options are truly endless and include meat from local butchers, dragon cheese, Cae Melwr Eggs, and Llaeth y llan yogurts.

“Greater reason to do this is the fact that for every local potato, lamb, or pint of milk we buy, that money is going to support both farmers and the communities they help sustain across our county.

“Our agricultural heroes have continued to provide a consistent supply of food throughout the pandemic, even whilst so many of us had no option but to remain indoors to help save lives. This celebration is a fantastic initiative to give our thanks.

“I also praise the campaign’s steps to raise funds for the DPJ Foundation. It’s most admirable that the farming community are putting others first during such a challenging time for the sector, with Coronavirus exposing the vulnerabilities of our current food system.

“The pandemic has shown that our nation’s farmers are open to a disproportionate share of risks. With this in mind, I encourage residents to keep buying local, beyond the Farmhouse Breakfast week, so that Wales’ sustainable produce sector can continue to go strength to strength.

“Personally, it is my wish to support farmers also by introducing a post-Brexit policy which places food security and food production at the heart of Welsh Government decision-making, and ensures that a baseline support payment is open and accessible to all active farmers that underpins agriculture and food production.”
