Janet Finch-Saunders MS has called for the increased uptake of cervical screenings, as part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy highlighted the awareness campaign, which runs from the 23rd to the 29th of January, and the importance of spotting the signs of cervical cancer early to ensure more effective treatment.

In the UK, the NHS offers cervical screening for women aged between 25 and 49 every three years, while women aged between 50 and 64 can be screened every five years. Those aged over 65 who have been screened in the past no longer need to be screened.

Speaking today, Janet said:

“In the UK, up to nine women a day are diagnosed with cervical cancer.

“On average, tragically, a third of these women lose their lives to the disease.

“But by identifying the symptoms earlier, women with cervical cancer can receive an earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment.

“I would encourage every woman to read up on the signs of cervical cancer, and to make an appointment with a GP to arrange a cervical screening if they have any concerns.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many people missed out on regular check-ups and screenings which could have caught diseases such as cancer at an earlier stage.

“By raising awareness, and encouraging the uptake of cervical screenings, we can all work together to help beat cervical cancer”.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS wedi galw ar fwy o bobl i fanteisio ar sesiynau sgrinio ceg y groth (serfigol), fel rhan o Wythnos Ymwybyddiaeth o Ganser Ceg y Groth.

Fe wnaeth Aelod Senedd Cymru dros Aberconwy dynnu sylw at yr ymgyrch codi ymwybyddiaeth, a gynhelir rhwng 23 a 29 Ionawr, a phwysigrwydd sylwi ar arwyddion canser ceg y groth yn gynnar er mwyn sicrhau triniaeth fwy effeithiol.

Yn y DU, mae'r GIG yn cynnig sgrinio serfigol i fenywod rhwng 25 a 49 oed bob tair blynedd, tra bod modd sgrinio menywod rhwng 50 a 64 oed bob pum mlynedd. Bellach, does dim angen sgrinio'r rhai dros 65 oed a gafodd eu sgrinio yn y gorffennol.

Wrth siarad heddiw, dywedodd Janet:

“Yn y DU, mae hyd at naw dynes y dydd yn cael diagnosis o ganser ceg y groth.

“Ar gyfartaledd, mae traean o'r menywod hyn yn colli eu bywydau i'r clefyd.

“Ond drwy adnabod y symptomau yn gynt, gall menywod sydd â chanser ceg y groth dderbyn diagnosis cynharach a thriniaeth fwy effeithiol.

“Byddwn yn annog pob dynes i nodi arwyddion o ganser ceg y groth, a threfnu apwyntiad gyda meddyg teulu i drefnu sgrinio os oes ganddyn nhw unrhyw bryderon.

“Oherwydd pandemig Covid-19, collodd llawer o bobl apwyntiadau archwilio a sgrinio rheolaidd a fyddai, o bosib, wedi dal afiechydon fel canser yn gynharach.

“Trwy godi ymwybyddiaeth, ac annog pobl i fanteisio ar wasanaeth sgrinio serfigol, gallwn ni gyd weithio gyda'n gilydd i helpu i guro canser ceg y groth”.
