Cannot “wait for accidents to happen” before changes to rural speed limits made

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has used a Welsh Conservative debate on roads to call for a review into rural speed limits to ensure “a change from the present reactive strategy towards enforcing proactive policy.” Janet also raised concerns about the planning of works to the A5 near Capel Curig and the A470 through the Conwy Valley as the region heads into the summer tourism season.

Commenting after the debate, Janet said:

“The issue of poor road conditions and under investment in North Wales is sadly nothing new. Throughout the Fifth Senedd, I campaigned relentlessly to see my local country routes improved and speed limits reduced from 60mph to protect our rural communities.

“But whilst the First Minister advised me that the guidance was to be reviewed from the Summer of 2020 onwards, this has not come to pass. I made clear in my speech today, a change from the present reactive strategy towards enforcing proactive policy must still be made.

“Indeed, we can no longer wait for accidents to happen before the necessary changes to speed limits are made. So, I will continue to call for a commitment from the Welsh Government that such a speed limit review will be undertaken.

“I have also called for an examination of road work planning, as works to the A5 near Capel Curig and the A470 through the Conwy Valley are causing considerable disruption as we head into the summer tourism season. After 15 months of challenge, this is the very last thing our businesses needed.”
