Yesterday, the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs confirmed that there will be increased patrols when tidal conditions are most suitable for gathering razer clams in Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr.

This announcement follows campaigns from Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy to provide greater safeguarding  for the razor clam populations, and protect them for illegal harvesting.

Commenting on the increase of patrols, Janet said:

“I greatly welcome this announcement as I have been directly asking and campaigning for a clampdown on illegal harvesting, as well as continuing to call for an assessment of the razor clam beds to be conducted.

“Posts from the local community on social media, highlighting the illegal gathering, has helped me to demonstrate the activity taking place.

“This is a fantastic victory, and I would also like to thank those who help to document this activity, as it is by doing this, along with continuing to call for a survey of the clam beds, that we will help protect this valuable species, the marine environment, and tackle the nature crisis.”

Ddoe, cadarnhaodd y Dirprwy Brif Weinidog ac Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Newid yn yr Hinsawdd a Materion Gwledig y bydd mwy o batrolau pan fydd yr amodau llanw ar eu mwyaf addas ar gyfer casglu cyllyll môr yn Llanfairfechan a Phenmaenmawr.

Mae'r cyhoeddiad hwn yn dilyn ymgyrchoedd gan Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, i ddarparu mwy o ddiogelwch i boblogaethau cyllyll môr, a'u hamddiffyn rhag cynaeafu anghyfreithlon.

Wrth sôn am y cynnydd mewn patrolau, dywedodd Janet:

"Rwy'n croesawu'r cyhoeddiad hwn yn fawr iawn gan fy mod wedi bod yn gofyn ac yn ymgyrchu'n uniongyrchol dros atal cynaeafu anghyfreithlon, ac wedi bod yn parhau i alw am asesiad o'r gwelyau cyllyll môr.

"Mae negeseuon gan y gymuned leol ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol, sy'n tynnu sylw at y cynaeafu anghyfreithlon, wedi fy helpu i weld beth sy'n digwydd.

"Mae hon yn fuddugoliaeth wych, a hoffwn hefyd ddiolch i'r rhai sy'n helpu i gofnodi’r gweithgaredd hwn, gan mai trwy wneud hyn, ynghyd â pharhau i alw am arolwg o'r gwelyau cyllyll môr, y gallwn helpu i amddiffyn y rhywogaeth werthfawr hon, yr amgylchedd morol, a mynd i'r afael â'r argyfwng natur."
