The BEDS – End Corridor Care in A&E is a fantastic campaign, led by retired consultant Jonathan Osborne FRCS, that aims to bring back community beds in community hospitals, end the tragedies occurring in A&E corridors, decrease patient deaths by reducing ambulance and corridor waits, and ensure that senior medics are present at the door of A&E.

Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy who supports this campaign, commented:

“I have continuously raised my concerns about the impacts of long waits for treatment in A&E departments, as well as the shocking and upsetting number of deaths occurring in A&E whilst patients wait for treatment. Corridor care is distressing for both patients and medical professionals, and it should come to an end.

“Mair Dowell, who has spent her career as a senior nurse in Glan Clwyd A&E, told the BEDS campaign that ‘a senior medical director found that, at the time, there were 90 patients in Glan Clwyd that shouldn’t be there, they should be at home or in cottage hospitals. What that meant was that there were 90 patients in A&E who couldn’t get a bed.’

“We need to ensure that the number of beds is not cut. We must call for community beds to be reopened so that people can be moved out of A&E and onto a ward. I encourage the Welsh Government to take note of this campaign and work with its organisers to achieve these goals.”

Mae BEDS - End Corridor Care in A&E yn ymgyrch wych, dan arweiniad y meddyg ymgynghorol sydd bellach wedi ymddeol, Jonathan Osborne FRCS, sy'n ceisio adfywio system o welyau cymunedol mewn ysbytai cymunedol, rhoi terfyn ar y trasiedïau sy'n digwydd mewn coridorau adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys, lleihau nifer y cleifion sy’n marw trwy leihau amseroedd aros mewn ambiwlans ac mewn coridorau, a sicrhau bod uwch feddygon yn bresennol wrth ddrws adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys.

Meddai Janet Finch-Saunders, AS Aberconwy, sy'n cefnogi'r ymgyrch hon:

"Rydw i wedi rhannu fy mhryderon dro ar ôl tro am effeithiau amseroedd aros hir am driniaeth mewn adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys, yn ogystal â'r nifer syfrdanol a brawychus o farwolaethau sy'n digwydd mewn adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys tra bod cleifion yn aros am driniaeth. Mae gofal mewn coridorau yn ofidus i gleifion ac i weithwyr meddygol proffesiynol, a dylai ddod i ben.

"Dywedodd Mair Dowell, sydd wedi treulio ei gyrfa fel uwch-nyrs yn Adran Damweiniau ac Achosion Brys Glan Clwyd, wrth ymgyrch BEDS fod 'uwch gyfarwyddwr meddygol wedi canfod na ddylai 90 o gleifion a oedd yng Nglan Clwyd ar y pryd fod yno, y dylen nhw fod gartref neu mewn ysbytai bwthyn. Roedd hynny’n golygu bod 90 o gleifion yn yr adran damweiniau ac achosion brys heb wely.'

"Mae angen i ni sicrhau nad yw nifer y gwelyau yn cael ei dorri. Mae'n rhaid i ni alw am ailagor gwelyau cymunedol fel y gall pobl gael eu symud allan o adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys ac i ward. Rwy'n annog Llywodraeth Cymru i gymryd sylw o'r ymgyrch hon a gweithio gyda'i threfnwyr i gyflawni’r nodau hyn."
