“Calls for Health Board to Explain Orthopaedic Hub Delays”

Llandudno Hospital’s new £29 million Orthopaedic Unit has been delayed again.

The hub was originally due to open in early 2025 but has now been pushed back three times, with the latest opening date set for summer 2026.

The delays have been attributed to staffing shortages and, more recently, issues with an air-handling unit.

Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Bangor Conwy Môn, who has long championed the new unit, commented:

“I am deeply concerned that the opening of this new Orthopaedic Unit continues to be delayed. The facility is designed to help reduce waiting lists, yet these setbacks mean pressure on our hospitals remains.

“I have submitted two Written Answer Questions to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, asking:

‘Will the Welsh Government confirm the opening date of the new orthopaedics unit at Llandudno Hospital?’

“The Cabinet Secretary responded:

‘The opening of the North Wales Orthopaedics Hub at Llandudno Hospital, scheduled for May, has been delayed. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is working closely with the contractor on the commissioning of the facility to enable the first patients to be seen as soon as possible. A revised date will be provided by the Health Board to the Welsh Government as soon as possible.’

“Given these ongoing delays, I have now also asked:

‘Will the Cabinet Secretary outline the reasons for the delay in opening the Llandudno Orthopaedic Unit?’

“In addition, I have written to the Chair of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, asking for an explanation of the delays, and for a new timeframe for the opening. Please be assured that I will continue to champion this important facility.”

However, it is vital that the public is provided with clarity on the revised opening date and the reasons behind these significant delays.”
