Janet Finch-Saunders MS is encouraging everyone to help improve awareness of breast cancer and support the goal of ensuring that all diagnosed with breast cancer live, and are supported to live well by 2050.

55,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer include:

  1. A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
  2. A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
  3. A change in the colour of the breast – the breast may look red or inflamed
  4. A nipple change, for example it has become pulled in (inverted)
  5. Rash or crusting around the nipple
  6. Unusual liquid (discharge) from either nipple
  7. Changes in size or shape of the breast

Commenting during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Janet said:

“The sooner breast cancer is found; the more successful treatment is likely to be.

“The message is clear: try to remember the symptoms and get any new or unusual changes checked by a GP.

“I urge you also to make yourselves aware of secondary or metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when breast cancer cells spread from the breast to other parts of the body. Breast Cancer Now has excellent resources online, and helpful advice available when calling 0808 800 6000”.
