Following the finding that one-fifth of health boards in the UK have failed to reach all key NHS targets, Janet Finch-Saunders, Assembly Member for Aberconwy, has dug deeper, finding that Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) is amongst the “worst in Wales”.
Responding to the waiting times, Janet said:
“The latest summary of waiting times for every health board in the UK is extremely worrying, especially for us here in Wales.
“Five of our seven health boards have missed every single waiting time target, with some of the worst failings being in Betsi Cadwaladr Unicersity Health Board.
“For example, our health board treated or admitted only 69.6% of patients within four hours, seriously missing the 95% target and falling below the Wales average of 80.3%.
“Expectedly, the health board was the worst in Wales on planned operations and care too, having only seen 84.5% of patients start treatment within 26 week of referral. As you will know, this is one of the main issues at the health board which is continuing to see patients suffer an unnecessary long time, such as the constituent who has waited four and a half years for a hip operation.
“The waiting times achieved reflect very badly on the Welsh Government’s management of the Welsh NHS. However, for us in North Wales the finding that we have missed every single target is further evidence that Vaughan Gething AM, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services, is failing to guide the health board out of special measures, and is providing residents here with a substandard service”.
