Following reports from a number of residents who have been left out of pocket after builders have taken their money and failed to complete work, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Bangor Conwy Môn, has called for action to tackle the practice of phoenixing.

Phoenixing is where builders dissolve their company, and start up again under a new name, writing off debts, after leaving customers out of pocket, often forcing them to live with unfinished and potentially dangerous work.

Making a statement in the Welsh Parliament, Janet commented:

“More needs to be done to tackle rogue traders and prevent them from simply starting up again. I will be writing to both the Prime Minister and the First Minister, calling on them to put measures in place that will bring this terrible practice to an end.

Janet added:

“While we have many excellent builders, and building companies in Bangor Conwy Môn, that should rightly be championed, there are individual serial cowboy builders out there, who are causing real heartache to constituents, leaving them with dangerous unfinished work and, in some cases, taking their hard-earned life savings with them.

She continued:

“Yet, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the different types of scams taking place across North Wales, which unfortunately seems to be a hotspot. We must bring phoenixing to an end, stop this cycle of repeat offending and ensure our residents are protected.”

Yn dilyn adroddiadau gan nifer o drigolion sydd ar eu colled ar ôl i adeiladwyr gymryd eu harian a methu â chwblhau’r gwaith, mae Janet Finch-Saunders, AS Bangor Conwy Môn, wedi galw am weithredu i fynd i'r afael â'r arfer o fusnesau yn deillio o gwymp cwmnïau blaenorol, fel arfer oherwydd ansolfedd.

“Ffenicsio” yw lle mae adeiladwyr yn diddymu eu cwmni ac yn dechrau eto o dan enw newydd, gan ddileu dyledion, ar ôl gadael cwsmeriaid ar eu colled, yn aml yn eu gorfodi i fyw gyda gwaith anorffenedig a allai fod yn beryglus.

Mewn datganiad yn y Senedd, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae angen gwneud mwy i fynd i'r afael â masnachwyr twyllodrus a'u hatal rhag dechrau eto. Byddaf yn ysgrifennu at Brif Weinidog Cymru a Phrif Weinidog y Deyrnas Unedig, yn galw arnyn nhw i roi mesurau ar waith a fydd yn dod â'r arfer ofnadwy hwn i ben.

Ychwanegodd Janet:

"Er bod gennym ni lawer o adeiladwyr a chwmnïau adeiladu rhagorol ym Mangor Conwy Môn, mae yna adeiladwyr twyllodrus penderfynol i gael sy'n achosi poendod go iawn i etholwyr, gan eu gadael gyda gwaith anorffenedig peryglus ac, mewn rhai achosion, ac yn mynd â'u cynilion bywyd gyda nhw.

Aeth ymlaen i ddweud:

"Eto, dim ond rhan fach o’r broblem yw hon o ran y gwahanol fathau o sgamiau sy'n digwydd ledled y Gogledd, ac mae’n ymddangos bod yr ardal hon yn denu llawer iawn o dwyllwyr. Mae'n rhaid i ni ddod â’r arfer o “ffenicsio” i ben, stopio'r cylch hwn o aildroseddu a sicrhau bod ein trigolion yn cael eu diogelu."
