Following reports from a number of residents who have been left out of pocket after builders have taken their money and failed to complete work, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Bangor Conwy Môn, has called for action to tackle the practice of phoenixing.
Phoenixing is where builders dissolve their company, and start up again under a new name, writing off debts, after leaving customers out of pocket, often forcing them to live with unfinished and potentially dangerous work.
Making a statement in the Welsh Parliament, Janet commented:
“More needs to be done to tackle rogue traders and prevent them from simply starting up again. I will be writing to both the Prime Minister and the First Minister, calling on them to put measures in place that will bring this terrible practice to an end.
Janet added:
“While we have many excellent builders, and building companies in Bangor Conwy Môn, that should rightly be championed, there are individual serial cowboy builders out there, who are causing real heartache to constituents, leaving them with dangerous unfinished work and, in some cases, taking their hard-earned life savings with them.
She continued:
“Yet, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the different types of scams taking place across North Wales, which unfortunately seems to be a hotspot. We must bring phoenixing to an end, stop this cycle of repeat offending and ensure our residents are protected.”
