As a means to improve public engagement and bring clarity over the proposals, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has announced that she is to hold a public town hall event on the Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm project on Friday 22nd October 2021 at 18:00.
The event will be held in the Assembly Room at Llandudno Town Hall. Due to Covid-19 regulations, attendance is strictly capped at 100 people and will work on a first-come-first-served basis. Interested constituents can RSVP to the event by emailing: [email protected].
The proposals for the project outline that up to 91 new turbines will be introduced adjacent to the operational Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm, located 10.6km off the coast of North Wales. The turbines will be a maximum of 332m to their tip. Whilst the project is still in the development stage and design works are ongoing, constituents can submit a consultation response.
The firm leading the project, German energy developer RWE, has been invited to the event, alongside a panel of leading and knowledgeable officials.
Announcing the event, Janet said:
“In recognising the wide-ranging concerns of local constituents with regards to the potential environmental and aesthetic impact of this long-running project, I am pleased to be convening a public town hall event in Llandudno so that the proposals can be reviewed and discussed.
“If introduced at their maximum height, our shoreline will be dotted with up to 91 structures that stand taller than the Eiffel tower. Such a scale is going to alter the world-famous vista of the Queen of Welsh Resorts. Taken in parallel with a potential impact on our bird and marine life, questions need to be asked and answered.
“I support unleashing the potential of our renewable energy sector, but developers must not forget that the Green Industrial Revolution aims to transform lives for the better and safeguard our landscapes. Transparency is a cornerstone of any major planning works so I hope that this engagement event will bring much needed clarity.”
