After finding that BCUHB has the highest number of incidents classified as severe and ending in death in Wales, Janet Finch-Saunders AM is calling for an urgent investigation.

BCUHB has the highest number of incidences ending in death:

Betsi Cadwaladr – 41

Cardiff and the Vale – 12

Aneurin Bevan – 7

Hywel Dda – 7

Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust – 7

Powys – 3

Abertawe Bro Morgannwg – 0

Cwm Taf – 0

Velindre NHS Trust – 0

Public Health Wales NHS Trust – 0

BCUHB has the highest number of incidences classified as severe:

Betsi Cadwaladr – 220

Cardiff and the Vale – 187

Aneurin Bevan – 31

Powys – 28

Cwm Taf – 9

Hywel Dda – 3

Abertawe Bro Morgannwg – 3

Velindre NHS Trust – 1

Public Health Wales NHS Trust – 0

Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust – 0

Reflecting on those stats, Janet said:

“These facts are horrific as what they show is that incidents at BCUHB have resulted in 41 deaths between October 2016 and September 2017.

“When any of us enter a hospital, we do expect to be safe. However, it seems that this is not the case in North Wales as patient safety data portrays the health board as being the worst in Wales.

“Thinking back to when BCUHB was put into special measures in 2015, one of the main reasons for this was the treatment of patients.

“Given that incidents in the health board are now recorded as costing people their lives, I do have to question again the Welsh Government’s ability to continue managing the board.

“I will be writing to Vaughan Gething, Cabinet Secretary for Health, Well-being and Sport, to ask for a full investigation as a matter of urgency”.
