Assembly Member for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders AM, visited Ysgol Glan Conwy last Friday, meeting with the Headteacher, Mrs Eifiona Price-Williams, and seeing the work of pupils.
The Member, and local pupils, have long been campaigning for a zebra crossing on the A470 – which would improve the safety for students crossing the road.
Janet said:
“Visiting local schools is a lovely part of my role as an Assembly Member – and each one is so wonderfully unique.
“It was great to see the work of pupils at Ysgol Glan Conwy – having worked with local schoolchildren and parents on the campaign for a zebra crossing on the A470 at Glan Conwy, I know how hard they work and how passionately they fight for something they believe in.”
The Member is now able to provide an update on the campaign, having further requested an update from the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates AM.
Janet said:
“I am delighted to be able to confirm that, following a strong campaign by myself and many local residents, the Welsh Government now commissioned a formal assessment of the current crossing point with a view to upgrading the facility. The Cabinet Secretary has assured me that he will look into the preferred location for a new crossing to determine which location is most suitable.
“The Welsh Government intends to conclude this work over the summer and bring forward a design in the autumn, and look forward to continuing to work with the Cabinet Secretary to see this project through to completion.”

The latest Estyn report for Ysgol Glan Conwy (2017) notes that:
- There are 119 pupils on roll, including 11 in the part-time nursery class [latest available figures - 2017]. The school has capacity for 147.
- The school has four mixed age classes, taught by five full-time teachers.
- About 14% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, which is below the national average.
- The school identifies around 30% of pupils as having additional learning needs, which is above the average for Wales.
- No pupil has a statement of special education needs.
- All pupils are of white British origin.
- Very few pupils speak Welsh at home.
- The last Estyn inspection was 2017 and it was ranked as ‘Good’.

Janet Finch-Saunders (Aberconwy): Will the Cabinet Secretary provide an update on the works to look into the feasibility of a zebra crossing being installed on the A470 in Glan Conwy? (WAQ76801)
Ken Skates: We have commissioned the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent to assess the existing crossing point with a view to upgrading the facility.
The assessment will consider the capacity of the existing crossing and determine the preferred location for a new crossing. It will also look at the potential footway widths and review the carriageway realignment to determine what changes could be made.
The Agent is aware of the issues at school pick up and drop off times and the activity of children crossing to the school playing fields.
The assessment is expected to be carried out this summer, with a view to progressing to a design in the autumn.
