The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, has welcomed the news that the Welsh Government has now approved the Outline Business Case put forward by Conwy County Borough Council, a plan that would see sand returned to Llandudno’s North Shore beach.
Following this approval, it is understood that work will commence on a Full Business Case which will advance the concept designs for the options in the Outline Business Case. Ground investigations will also be carried out along with a public consultation later this year.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“Since the dumping of quarry rocks in 2014 I have worked tirelessly with stakeholders, local businesses and residents to see our fabulous North Shore beach returned to its former glory.
“In aid of this, at the end of last year I wrote to Julie James MS, Minister for Climate Change, Welsh Government, in support of the Local Authority’s Outline Business Case and its proposals to see sand returned to Llandudno’s North Shore beach.
“The quarry stones have made most of the beach inaccessible for the elderly, young children and disabled people, with hoteliers and local businesses reporting of the impact of these stones on the local tourism industry. With the economic impact of tourism in Llandudno expected to rise to over £500 million by 2045 it is a tragedy that Llandudno, the Queen of Welsh Resorts has had its fabulous beach ruined in this way.
“Given this, I am truly delighted to see that positive progress has been made to see these stones removed. I would like to commend the professionalism and efforts of the officers within the Environment, Roads and Facilities department, led by Mr Geraint Edwards who have worked so hard to put this case together.
“I would also like to thank the previous Cabinet of Conwy County Borough Council for their hard work on this matter. And I would encourage the new Local Authority Cabinet to continue to fight for the return of sand to this beach with the same energy and vigour. We cannot afford to waste another minute in seeing these rocks removed and sand returned to this fantastic beach.”

AS Aberconwy wrth ei bodd gyda'r cynnydd wrth gael tywod yn ôl i Draeth y Gogledd Llandudno
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o Senedd Cymru dros Aberconwy, wedi croesawu'r newyddion bod Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cymeradwyo'r Achos Busnes Amlinellol a gyflwynwyd gan Gyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy erbyn hyn, sef cynllun i ddychwelyd tywod i Draeth y Gogledd Llandudno.
Yn dilyn y gymeradwyaeth hon, deellir y bydd gwaith yn dechrau ar Achos Busnes Llawn a fydd yn bwrw ymlaen â’r cynlluniau cysyniad ar gyfer yr opsiynau yn yr Achos Busnes Amlinellol. Bydd ymchwiliadau tir yn cael eu cynnal hefyd yn ogystal ag ymgynghoriad cyhoeddus yn ddiweddarach eleni.
Wrth sôn am y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:
“Ers gwaredu cerrig chwarel yno yn 2014 rwyf wedi gweithio'n ddiflino gyda rhanddeiliaid, busnesau lleol a thrigolion i sicrhau bod Traeth gwych y Gogledd yn dychwelyd i'w ogoniant blaenorol.
“I’r perwyl hwn ysgrifennais at Julie James AS, Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd Llywodraeth Cymru, ddiwedd y llynedd i gefnogi Achos Busnes Amlinellol yr Awdurdod Lleol a'i gynigion i ddychwelyd i Draeth y Gogledd Llandudno.
“Mae'r cerrig chwarel wedi gwneud y rhan fwyaf o'r traeth yn anhygyrch i'r henoed, plant ifanc a phobl anabl, ac roedd perchnogion gwestai a busnesau lleol yn sôn am effaith wael hyn ar y diwydiant ymwelwyr lleol. Gan fod disgwyl i effaith economaidd twristiaeth yn Llandudno godi i dros £500 miliwn erbyn 2045, mae'n drasiedi bod Llandudno, 'Brenhines Cyrchfannau Glan y Môr Cymru', wedi colli traeth mor odidog â hwn.
“O gofio hyn, rwy'n falch tu hwnt o weld y cynnydd cadarnhaol sy'n cael ei wneud i symud y cerrig hyn. Hoffwn ganmol proffesiynoldeb ac ymdrechion swyddogion Adran yr Amgylchedd, Ffyrdd a Chyfleusterau, dan arweiniad Mr Geraint Edwards sydd wedi gweithio mor galed i lunio'r achos hwn.
“Hoffwn ddiolch hefyd i Gabinet blaenorol Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy am eu gwaith caled ar y mater hwn. A byddwn yn annog Cabinet newydd yr Awdurdod Lleol i barhau i frwydro dros ddychwelyd tywod i'r traeth gyda'r un egni a brwdfrydedd. Allwn ni ddim fforddio gwastraffu eiliad arall cyn cael gwared ar y cerrig a mwynhau traeth tywodlyd braf yma unwaith eto."
