Speaking in the Senedd today, Janet Finch-Saunders Aberconwy MS/AS has questioned the Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales on providing incentives to boost agricultural productivity in Wales. Following recent comments by the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, of  “apocalyptic” global food prices, Janet called for a quick resoution on improving food security and affordability in Wales.

Commenting in the Senedd, Janet said.

“David Edwards, NFU Cymru County chairman for Monmouthshire, wants to see the Welsh Government recognise that the continued supply of affordable, high-quality, domestically produced food is a strategic national priority. The war in Ukraine has risen this issue to the very top of the food chain and we can’t be complacent while the war continues to threaten food security across Europe and the World.”

On the 11th of March, Janet asked if the Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales had any plans to support Welsh arable farmers to plough land set aside under the Glastir scheme. However since, there appears to have been little to no progress made.

Commenting further, Janet said.

“Wales has some of the best farming land in the UK but the Welsh Government has failed to utilise this incredible resource and support our farming industry. This can’t continue if we are to address food security concerns and to maximise the potential of our agricultural industry.”
