After reporting alleged pollution being released into the Conwy River at Llanrwst, the Member of the Welsh Parliament, Janet Finch-Saunders, urgently raised this incident with Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
Having now received a response from Mr Martin Cox, Head of Operations North West at NRW, Janet is pleased to report that it appears that a fault was detected within the sewage network by Dŵr Cymru / Welsh Water (DCWW) and has now been repaired.
It is believed that this fault was the source of the pollution seen in the Conwy River, however, DCWW are continuing to monitor the manhole to ensure the repair has been effective.
Commenting on the matter Janet said:
“I am aware that following the reports of pollution within the Conwy River many residents were deeply concerned and as such, I am thrilled to see that my intervention has assisted in identifying this issue and ensuring that NRW & DCWW took the appropriate steps to address this matter.
“Llanrwst and the Conwy Valley can rest assured that works have been undertaken to repair the fault within the sewage system and that continuous monitoring is ongoing to ensure the works have been successful in preventing further pollution of our river.
“I would like to commend NRW and DCWW for their swift response to my correspondence and in taking the appropriate action to identify and resolve this issue.
“Additionally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents who so quickly identified this pollution and brought it to my attention. Their fast reactions undoubtedly prevented further waste being released into our beautiful Conwy River which would have done untold damage to the unique ecosystem of the entire valley.
“This is a clear example of the important role that every single one of us can play in protecting our environment from needless damage or pollution.”
