Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, who has long campaigned against leasehold properties, has welcomed the commitment to ending the outdated leasehold system and making commonhold the default tenure for new flats.
The proposed reforms will give homeowners greater control over their properties, putting an end to unfair practices and excessive costs imposed by third-party landlords. Under the new plans, homeowners will no longer have to pay unnecessary costs such as ground rent, and they will have a stronger say in how their buildings are managed.
Commenting on the announcement, Janet said:
"I have been campaigning on this for a number of years now. For too long, leaseholders have been at the mercy of third-party landlords who impose excessive fees and restrictive conditions.
“These reforms mark a significant step towards fairness and accountability in homeownership. By making commonhold the default tenure, homeowners will finally have the control they deserve over their own properties.
"I welcome the commitment to deliver on this commitment and ensure that the leasehold system is phased out in favour of a modern and fair alternative. This will be life-changing for many homeowners, particularly those who have been burdened by unfair ground rents and service charges.
“However, I will continue to push for swift action to ensure these changes are implemented effectively, giving homeowners in North Wales and beyond the certainty and control they deserve.”
