On Saturday we saw the narrow ascent of Vaugh Gething to Welsh Labour Leader, winning only 51.7% of the vote.

Responding to the news Janet said:

“I would like to wish my congratulations to Vaughan Gething on his election as leader of the Labour Party in Wales.

“While I may not align with Vaughan's political views on many fronts, I know that we share a deep love for our nation that transcends politics and I wish him well in his new role.

“I do hope Vaughan steers Labour in a fresh direction, veering away from Welsh Labour's recent attacks on our small businesses and tourism sector, which is seeing business rate relief cut from 75% to 35% and a tourism tax that will cripple small business owners. A 20mph speed limit and tight control on permitted development rights is hindering growth in more rural areas and this must end now. Indeed, shocking figures show that last year Wales lost more than a pub a week in 2023 with 63 shutting their doors.

“This is why I hope Vaughan will immediately take us in a direction that will encourage growth and sustainability. I would encourage him to engage with our farmers regarding the Sustainable Farming Scheme. For some time now, the relationship between the farming community that provide our groceries, meat and dairy, and those in the Cardiff Bay bubble has become extremely fraught and needs to reconciled.

“Sadly, Vaughan’s time as Health Minister is another example of the failures in the Welsh Labour Government. He presided over the politicising of the Betsi Cadwalader University Health Board going in and out of special measures, to the detriment of hospital standards and has contributed to hospital waiting times being vastly longer than those in England.

“There is a real chance of change here, and I encourage Vaughan to seize this opportunity and heed constructive opposition by engaging with voices from across the aisle. By doing so, we can collectively restore a sense of sensibility and pragmatism to the role of First Minister.”

Ddydd Sadwrn gwelsom Vaughan Gething yn cael ei ethol yn Arweinydd Llafur Cymru, gan ennill o drwch blewyn gyda dim ond 51.7% o'r bleidlais.

Wrth ymateb i'r newyddion dywedodd Janet:

“Hoffwn longyfarch Vaughan Gething ar gael ei ethol yn arweinydd y Blaid Lafur yng Nghymru.

“Er nad wyf yn cyd-fynd â safbwyntiau gwleidyddol Vaughan mewn sawl maes, gwn ein bod yn rhannu cariad dwfn tuag at ein cenedl sydd uwchlaw gwleidyddiaeth ac rwy'n dymuno'n dda iddo yn ei rôl newydd.

“Gobeithio y bydd Vaughan yn llywio Llafur i gyfeiriad newydd, gan wyro oddi wrth ymosodiadau diweddar Llafur Cymru ar ein busnesau bach a'n sector twristiaeth. Mae'r rhyddhad ardrethi busnes wedi gostwng o 75% i 35% ac mae’r dreth dwristiaeth yn ei gwneud yn anodd iawn i berchnogion busnesau bach. Mae terfyn cyflymder o 20mya a rheolaeth dynn ar hawliau datblygu a ganiateir yn rhwystro twf mewn ardaloedd mwy gwledig a rhaid i hyn ddod i ben nawr. Yn wir, mae ffigurau brawychus yn dangos bod Cymru wedi colli mwy na thafarn yr wythnos yn 2023, gyda 63 yn cau eu drysau.

“Dyna pam rwy'n gobeithio y bydd Vaughan yn mynd â ni ar drywydd twf a chynaliadwyedd ar unwaith. Byddwn yn ei annog i ymgysylltu â'n ffermwyr ynglŷn â'r Cynllun Ffermio Cynaliadwy. Mae'r berthynas rhwng y gymuned amaeth sy'n darparu ein bwydydd, ein cig a'n llaeth, a'r rhai sy'n byw a bod yn swigen Bae Caerdydd wedi troi'n un digon blin, a rhaid adfer y sefyllfa.

“Yn anffodus, mae cyfnod Vaughan fel Gweinidog Iechyd yn enghraifft arall o fethiannau Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru. Fe oedd wrth y llyw wrth i gyfnod Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr mewn mesurau arbennig droi’n arf wleidyddol ac mae’r holl broses wedi cael effaith andwyol ar safonau ysbytai a chyfrannu at amseroedd aros llawer hirach nag ysbytai Lloegr.

“Mae siawns gwirioneddol o newid yma, ac rwy'n annog Vaughan i fanteisio ar y cyfle hwn a gwrando ar wrthwynebiad adeiladol trwy ymgysylltu â lleisiau o bob ochr. Drwy wneud hynny, ar y cyd gallwn adfer ymdeimlad o sensitifrwydd a phragmatiaeth i rôl y Prif Weinidog.”
