In keeping with her recent campaign work on behalf of the regional tourism economy, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (04 February) spoken of her plans to hold a series of virtual forums for local accommodation providers.

It is hoped that these digital forums will provide an opportunity to discuss the unique challenges faced by the industry, particularly as a result of Coronavirus, with a view to drawing up a plan designed to strengthen the sector, as the region looks to build back better from the events of the past year.

The first roundtable discussion will examine the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on the constituency’s hotels, with addresses planned from Berin Jones, Chairman of the Llandudno Hospitality Association, and Jim Jones, Director of Go North Wales Tourism. Two further events will hold discussions with guesthouses and B&Bs, as well as self-catering accommodation and holiday parks.

Speaking ahead of this scheduled season of digital events, Janet said:

“Throughout the pandemic, I have been most pleased to hold regular virtual discussions with local accommodation providers. Now, these new virtual roundtable forums will provide the industry a unique and much needed opportunity to collectively discuss the issues faced over the past year.

“Despite the past year, I believe that Aberconwy remains the beating heart of Wales’s tourism offer. After all, figures from before the pandemic suggested that the economic benefit of tourism to the  County was worth in the region of £900 million, generated from around 9.5 million annual visitors.

“The industry is an essential job creator that also benefits our excellent local selection of cafes, restaurants and attractions. With the assistance of local trade representatives, these discussions should reveal what assistance is needed to ensure the industry regains its strength.

“As this new year begins, and the vaccine roll-out promises a potential staycation holiday season in the summer, it is only right that the industry charts a positive plan to build back better. I heartily recommend that any interested provider attends their relevant session.”
