Aberconwy MS encourages schools to “opt-in” for schoolbook celebrating Platinum Jubilee

Last year the UK Government commissioned a schoolbook that would explore the role of the Monarch within the UK political system and what the Platinum Jubilee represents.

While this book has been translated into Welsh and was intended to be handed out to schools across the UK, the Welsh Government has decided to operate an opt-in scheme, requiring schools to sign up to receive a copy of this literature.

Given this, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, has written to headteachers across the constituency, encouraging them to opt-in.

Commenting on the matter Janet said:

“The Welsh Government’s opt-in scheme is an attempt to establish an unnecessary road block requiring headteachers and schools to jump through hoops.

“The Queen has served our nation her entire adult life and is a symbol of community and charitable work across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

“Having served as our Head of State for almost 70 years I believe that it is only right that children across our community are given this opportunity to participate in this national celebration but also to discover the important and unique role the Monarch plays within our political system.

“Therefore, I believed it to be crucial that I took this opportunity to implore educators across Aberconwy to sign up to receive a copy of the book and to ensure that every child has the opportunity to understand this important historical moment.”
