Aberconwy MS celebrates World Wildlife Day

On World Wildlife Day the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Janet Finch-Saunders, has made renewed calls on the Welsh Government to take urgent actions to address the Nature emergency declared in Wales last year.

Commenting on this issue Janet said:

“In June 2021, the Welsh Parliament declared a nature emergency. We voted in favour of introducing legally binding requirements to reverse biodiversity loss through statutory targets.

“Five months later all the Minister for Climate Change and the cooperation partners in Plaid Cymru could do was reiterates what had already been agreed. In fact, only in January of this year Wales Environment Link wrote to the First Minister stating that the scale and pace of action needed to address the nature crisis is not in place.

“This is why on World Wildlife Day I again urge the Welsh Government to take the robust action which is required to ensure that Wales prevents another lost decade for nature.

“Action such as, protecting up to 30% of Land and Oceans in Wales by 2030, a commitment endorsed by G7 leaders last May but still has not been made law here in Wales, could have a positive impact.

“Welsh Government has a vital duty to protect and preserve biodiversity and our environment in Wales for future generations. The time for action is now.”

Ar Ddiwrnod Bywyd Gwyllt y Byd mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS Aberconwy a Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd wedi galw o'r newydd ar Lywodraeth Cymru i gymryd camau brys i fynd i'r afael â'r argyfwng natur a gafodd ei ddatgan yng Nghymru y llynedd.

Wrth sôn am y mater hwn, dywedodd Janet:

“Ym mis Mehefin 2021, fe wnaeth Senedd Cymru ddatgan argyfwng natur. Fe wnaethom bleidleisio o blaid cyflwyno gofynion cyfreithiol rwymol i wrthdroi colli bioamrywiaeth drwy dargedau statudol.

“Bum mis yn ddiweddarach, yr unig beth allai Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd a'r partneriaid cydweithio ym Mhlaid Cymru ei wneud oedd ategu'r hyn a gytunwyd eisoes. Yn wir, dim ond ym mis Ionawr eleni yr ysgrifennodd Cyswllt Amgylchedd Cymru at y Prif Weinidog yn datgan nad yw graddfa a chyflymder y camau sydd angen eu cymryd yn mynd i'r afael â'r argyfwng natur yn eu lle.

“Dyna pam fy mod i, ar Ddiwrnod Bywyd Gwyllt y Byd, yn annog Llywodraeth Cymru unwaith eto i gymryd y camau cadarn sy'n ofynnol i sicrhau bod Cymru'n atal degawd arall o golledion natur.

“Gallai camau fel diogelu hyd at 30% o diroedd a moroedd yng Nghymru erbyn 2030, ymrwymiad a gymeradwywyd gan arweinwyr y G7 fis Mai diwethaf ond sydd heb ei wneud yn gyfraith yma yng Nghymru o hyd, gael effaith gadarnhaol.

“Mae gan Lywodraeth Cymru ddyletswydd hanfodol i warchod a diogelu bioamrywiaeth a'n hamgylchedd yng Nghymru ar gyfer cenedlaethau'r dyfodol. Rwan ydi'r amser i weithredu."
