During the panel discussion, the Shadow Minister explained that
- 1900 people are on the waiting list for housing in Conwy County
- Several hundred people are living in temporary accommodation in Conwy County
- Temporary accommodation in Conwy County includes B&Bs and hotels
- Around 50 section 21 eviction notices have been issued in the last couple of months
Commenting after the interview, Janet said:
“Through my cooperation with Conwy Housing Solutions it has become clear that the housing situation has become a crisis.
“I know that the officers in Conwy are trying their best to support individuals and families facing this crisis, but the reality is that there just is not enough accommodation to meet demand.
“Because of Welsh Government legislation private landlords are quickly departing the sector, meaning that there are less homes available to rent. In fact, across Wales, it is expected that a further 49% of landlords are planning to sell a property in the next 12 months.
“Already, the spend on temporary accommodation in Conwy County has jumped from £1.25m in 2018/19 to £2.5m in 2020/21, and nationally in Wales, from £5m to £20m. With the haemorrhaging of the private landlord sector, I fear that this is going to get worse.
“The Welsh Government need to urgently get a grip on the crisis by stopping the legislation which is forcing landlords out, and urgently taking measures to achieve house building targets”.

- Tua 50 o orchmynion troi allan Adran 21 wedi eu cyhoeddi yn ystod y misoedd diwethaf
Meddai Janet wedi'r cyfweliad:
“Drwy fy ngwaith gyda 'Datrysiadau Tai Conwy', mae'n amlwg ei bod hi'n argyfwng ar y sefyllfa dai erbyn hyn.
“Rwy'n gwybod bod y swyddogion yng Nghonwy yn gwneud eu gorau glas i gefnogi unigolion a theuluoedd sy'n wynebu'r argyfwng hwn, ond y gwir amdani yw nad oes digon o lety i ateb y galw.
“Oherwydd deddfwriaeth Llywodraeth Cymru mae landlordiaid preifat yn gadael y sector yn gyflym iawn, sy'n golygu bod llai o gartrefi ar gael i'w rhentu. Ar draws Cymru, disgwylir y bydd 49% yn rhagor o landlordiaid yn bwriadu gwerthu eiddo dros y 12 mis nesaf.
“Eisoes, mae'r gwariant ar lety dros dro yn Sir Conwy wedi neidio o £1.25m yn 2018/19 i £2.5m yn 2020/21, ac o £5m i £20m yng Nghymru gyfan. Gyda'r sector landlordiaid preifat yn prysur edwino, rwy'n ofni mai mynd o ddrwg i waeth wnaiff pethau.
“Mae angen i Lywodraeth Cymru fynd i'r afael â'r argyfwng ar fyrder trwy atal y ddeddfwriaeth sy'n gorfodi landlordiaid i werthu, a chymryd camau brys i fodloni'r targedau adeiladu tai".
