Following years of community campaigning for a safe pedestrian crossing along the A470 in Glan Conwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, Assembly Member for Aberconwy, has secured a promise from Ken Skates AM, Minister for Economy and Transport, that action will be taken.

The Minister’s commitment can be seen in his response to a question by Janet, a copy of which can be found at the end.

Commenting on her achievement, Janet said:

“Since the Welsh Government announced their plans to improve black cat roundabout I have been clear that pedestrian safety at the heart of Glan Conwy should not be overlooked.

“My scrutiny of the proposed works and the Minister has disclosed that the new traffic light system could result in an increased risk to pedestrian safety in Glan Conwy.

“So to address this, I have pushed forwards the decade old campaign for a safe crossing in the village.

“To my delight, the Welsh Government has finally agreed that action should be taken.

“Having listened to my concerns about safety, the Minister is now proposing to upgrade the existing crossing point at the junction of Church Street / A470 in Glan Conwy, and develop the existing footway on the west side to provide a shared use path to link Church Street to the leisure facilities and businesses at Cae Ffwt.

“I hope that as many residents as possible will attend the public event on this matter once the Welsh Government decide on a date”.

Written Assembly Question by Janet:

Further to WAQ78841 and the expectation that there will be an improved traffic flow along the northbound A470 through Glan Conwy, has consideration been given to the increased risk this could cause to pedestrians attempting to cross the road in the village?

Response from Ken Skates AM, Minister for Economy and Transport:

Due consideration will be given to the safety of all modes of transport including cyclists and pedestrians during the feasibility and design stages of this scheme.

We also propose to upgrade the existing crossing point at the junction of Church Street / A470 in Glan Conwy. This will include the upgrade of the existing footway on the west side to provide a shared use path to provide a link from Church Street to the leisure facilities and businesses at Cae Ffwt business park.

The project is at detailed design stage and we will be holding a public event in the near future to engage with the community.
